Snoezelen, or multi sensory environment, is used for people with disabilities, and involves exposing them to a soothing and stimulating environment. The “Snoezelen Room” is specially designed to deliver stimuli to various senses, using lighting effects, color, sounds, music, scents, etc.

Snoezelen is a combination of the Dutch words “snuffelen”, meaning to seek out or explore, and “doezelen”, which means to relax. Snoezelen was originally developed by two psychiatrists from Holland in the 1970’s as a leisure experience for learning diffculties.

The Snoezelen treatment recognized that everyone has the right to experience quality leisure. Children, especially, need time for play, relaxation, and enjoyment in a pleasurable and stimulating setting. The Snoezelen Room provides a non-threatening environment where one can simply enjoy combinations of music, lighting effects, gentle vibrations and touch.

Individuals in the following categories may benefit from snoezelen therapy: Autism Spectrum, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Anxiety disorders, Developmental disabilities, ADD, and ADHD, chronic pain and any cognitive, sensory and physical disability.

The criterion is as follows: anyone with exceptionally high states of arousal, stress, agitation, anxiety, pain and/or sensory processing disorder. They may have hypersensitivity (too much) or hyposensitivity (too little) to the normal sensory experience in their lives. When traditional methods have failed, the snoezelen room has components which calm and relax to a working state of arousal.

This is the only multi-sensory room in southeastern North Carolina. Contact us to learn more (910)-755-6075.
